Mary Jane Benton, daughter of Scott and Agnes Repass Patterson, was born January 1, 1925 in Granby, Missouri. She was taken into the Lord’s care, June 20, 2018 at her home, surrounded by family, at the age of ninety-three years, five months, and nineteen days.
On December 25, 1943, she married Chester Hugh Benton and to this union two loving daughters were born. In January of 1996 Chester passed away after spending fifty-two years with Jane.
Jane is preceded in death by her husband, Chester; her parents; her two brothers, Robert and Ned Patterson; and three sisters, Mabel Lancaster, Lola Love, and Betty Allen.
Jane is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Graham and her husband Larry, of Hartville, Missouri and Paula Todd and her husband Ivan, of Hartville, Missouri; two grandchildren, Michael Nelson and his wife Angela, of Springfield, Missouri and Andrea Lane and her husband Nathan, of Buffalo, Missouri; four great-grandchildren, Hunter Rector, Stetson Rector, Cody Rector, and Ryne Nelson; eight step-grandchildren; eighteen step-great-grandchildren; nine step-great-great-grandchildren; four nieces and nephews; four special great-nieces and nephews; many other relatives and caring friends.
Jane was born and raised in Granby, Missouri and graduated from Granby High School in 1942. She met and fell in love with Chester in August of 1942 while Chester was working construction on Camp Crowder. They married on Christmas Day the next year. After Chester came back from the service, they moved out to the farm and Jane quickly became the farm girl from the big city. She worked hard on the farm and milked her cows for over thirty-five years.
Jane and Chester were members of the Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church and attended every Sunday. While they were members at the church Jane taught a Sunday school class. After Chester’s passing, Jane became a member of the New Home Free Will Baptist Church and attended faithfully until the middle of May. Jane had a very strong faith and read her Bible every day.
Through her life, Jane was a part of several clubs and committees including the Cattleman’s Club, the Democratic Committee, and she was secretary for the Coldwater Cemetery. She was also a member of TOPS in Grovespring, which she enjoyed very much.
Jane loved to press flowers, knit, and listen to the radio. She also put out a huge garden every spring to help feed her family fresh fruits and vegetables. She also took pictures of her family and friends. But most importantly, Jane loved her family and spending time with them. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, step-grandmother, sister, aunt, and caring friend. We celebrate her life and will always cherish the many happy memories she created.
