Mary Leona Bohrer's Obituary
Mary Leona Bohrer, the only child of John Cornelus and Cora Lee Crim Schmidt, was born October 7, 1907, near Monroe City, Missouri. She departed this life Saturday, January 28, 2006, in Christian Healthcare South, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety-eight years, three months, and twenty-one days. On March 29, 1931, she was united in marriage to Omer L. Bohrer, and to this union one son was born. Her parents and her husband preceded her in death. Leona is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John E. “Jack” and Fran Bohrer, of Lakeland, Florida; two granddaughters, Dr. Barbara Lutz, and her husband, Brian, of McDonough, Georgia, and Betsy Weatherby, of Lakeland, Florida; a grandson, Robert Bohrer, and his wife, Sharon, of Berkley Heights, New Jersey; seven great-grandchildren; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was born and raised on her parent’s farm in Monroe County, Missouri. She attended a one-room rural school through the eighth grade and then graduated as class valedictorian from Monroe City High School. After attending summer school in Kirksville, she earned her County Teachers Certificate and taught all grades in a one-room rural school for a year. She then attended Kirksville State University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. She taught one year in the Kirksville Public School System. During this time Leona met Omer and upon his graduation from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, they were married and came to Lebanon in 1931. Here the couple made their home, established his practice, and lovingly raised their son. Upon moving to Lebanon, Leona and Omer placed their membership in the First Christian Church where they were always very active and supportive members. She loved Lebanon and felt the warmth of the people, and enthusiastically served in her community for as long as she was able. She was a member of the Lebanon Study Club, the Lebanon Women’s Club, served as the first secretary of Lebanon’s first Library Board, and was a charter member of Chapter HS of P.E.O. Throughout the years, her main interest was her home and her family. Leona was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories she created for her family and friends. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2006, in the First Christian Church, Lebanon. Burial will be in Mount Rose Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 7 - 8:30 p.m. under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Lebanon, Missouri.
