Mayme Thomas' Obituary
Mayme Esther Thomas, daughter of Franklin J. and Teressie Bell Corkery Stowe, was born August 29, 1908, near Lebanon, in Laclede County, Missouri. She departed this life Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in Christian Health Care of Republic, Missouri, at the age of ninety-eight years, six months, and twenty-nine days. On February 6, 1926, she was united in marriage to Elbert “Jack” Thomas, and to this union two daughters and one son were born. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of almost fifty-three years, Jack, on January 16, 1979; a daughter, Opal Mae Corbin; a son, Orville Efton Thomas; three brothers; and three sisters. Mayme is survived by a daughter, Mable Fern Chastain, of Bois D’Arc, Missouri; ten grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two nieces; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends. She was born the youngest daughter of the Stowe family and was raised near Lebanon until 1915, when the family moved near Sleeper. Then in 1919, they moved to the Phillipsburg community, where Mayme attended school. After she and Jack were married, they made their home in Rogers, Arkansas for a while before settling on the old Thomas farm, near Lebanon, in Dallas County. There Mayme was a hardworking and devoted homemaker to her family and she and Jack lovingly raised their children. Mayme accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized by Elder Witt on the Joe Carter homestead in 1933. She was a longtime member of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, near Long Lane, and attended services for as long as her health allowed. She belonged to a quilting club and enjoyed making quilts for her family. She liked picking blackberries, traveling, family ballgames, and cooking. Her family was always foremost in her life and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Mayme was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. She will be fondly remembered for her Christian example, and for the love and kindness she gave so freely to her family and friends. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2007, in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Lebanon. Burial will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Lebanon, Missouri.
