Michael Sternberg (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Michael Lee Sternberg, age 67 of Plato, Missouri, passed away Friday, June 30, 2023 in Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri after a battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Michael was born April 25, 1956 in Fort Benjamin Harris, Indiana to the late Captain (Ret) Paul Sternberg and Shirley Becker. He was the third of five children born to Paul and Shirley.
Michael served in the United States Army and retired after 24 years of service as a First Sergeant, having fought in Desert Strom and conducting peace keeping operations in Bosnia as well as many assignments overseas and in the United States. After retiring from the Army, Michael returned to the Plato area to care for his aging parents and in-laws.
Michael met his future bride and love of his life, Candace Wiederaenders, at the ripe old age of 12. They were married in July of 1974 after his graduation from high school and before his enlistment in the Army. They had four children, Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Nicholas Sternberg of Wales, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Daniel Sternberg of Leavenworth, Kansas, Michael Sternberg, II of Leavenworth, Kansas and Samantha Sternberg of Plato, Missouri.
Michael and Candace are the proud grandparents of ten grandsons and one granddaughter, Jonathan Emerson, Cameron Allen, Jackson Sternberg, Tobias Sternberg, Lloyd Sternberg, Kari-Lyn “Paige” Sternberg, Stanley Sternberg, Fisher Sternberg, Everett Sternberg, Paxton Sternberg and Cyrus “Asher” Sternberg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Shirley Sternberg; his brother, Chief Warrant Officer 2 (Ret) Paul Sternberg, Jr.; his niece, Sarah Sternberg; and two nephews, James Sternberg and Ian Smart.
In addition to his wife, his children and his grandchildren, Michael is survived by his siblings, Arnold Sternberg and his wife, Jeanie of Arkansas, Dennis Sternberg and his wife, Mary of Arkansas, and Patricia Greer and her husband, Kenny of Lebanon, Missouri, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Michael loved his family and was proud to serve in the Army. He leaves a legacy of dedication, honor and loyalty. The memories he made with his family, co-workers and friends, will long be remembered.
