Nora "Velma" Ferriel (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Nora Velma Ferriel, daughter of Jessie Alonzo “Lon” and Ella May Mansker Wood, was born December 24, 1911, near Hartville, Missouri. She departed this life Tuesday, December 4, 2012, in Mercy Hospital, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of one hundred years, eleven months, and ten days.
On January 1, 1928, she was united in marriage to Loman Basil Ferriel, and to this union three daughters were born. Velma and Loman shared forty-three years before his passing on July 21, 1971.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Esther Young; a grandson, Phillip Young: three sisters, Nettie Gregory, Opal Rowe, and Agnes Hensley; a half-brother, Cecil Wood; a half-sister, Cora Sullivant; three nephews, Donald, Gerald, and Gene Gregory; and two nieces, Maxine Garner, and Dottie Jean Radford.
Velma is survived by two daughters, Joyce Butts, and her husband, John, of Springfield, Missouri, and Wilda Ferriel, of Lebanon, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Donna Frey, and her husband, Bob, Rick Young, and his wife, Carolyn, Lee Ann Young, Diana Wilkerson, and her husband, Lyle, Donald Fisher, and his wife, Carol, Glen Fisher, Robert “Bob” Fisher, and his wife, Thresa; six great-grandchildren, Cameron Fisher, Bradley Fisher, Lora Dye, Dee Crider, Ryan Young, and Trey Wilkerson; three great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
She was born and raised near Hartville, in Wright County, Missouri. After she and Loman were married, they made their home near Hartville, and lovingly raised their daughters. Throughout the years, Velma was a devoted homemaker to her husband and family. Later, Velma moved into Hartville for several years before making her home in Lebanon for the last several years.
Velma professed her faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized in the Gasconade River, near Green Valley Baptist Church. After moving to Hartville, she joined First Baptist Church. At the time of her passing, she was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Lebanon, where she attended faithfully as long as her health allowed.
In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, making quilts, and working in her garden. Her family was very dear to her and she especially enjoyed all of her grandchildren.
Velma was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, great-great-great-grandmother, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her long life and her accomplishments, and will treasure the memories we have. She will be greatly missed.
