Norma Jean Shumate (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Norma Jean Shumate, daughter of Bert and Vival Warren Pendergrass, was born March 12, 1930, near Reed Springs, Missouri. She departed this life Sunday, July 28, 2019, in her home, near Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of eighty-nine years, four months, and sixteen days.
On January 14, 1951, she was united in marriage to John Franklin Shumate, and to this union one daughter and two sons were born.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, on August 6, 2012; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Shumate; two great-grandsons, Hunter Beesley, and Weston Odorizzi; four brothers, Jack, Clyde, Ralph “R.B.” and Kenneth Pendergrass; and a sister, Robbi Shawn.
Norma is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Pollreisz, and her husband George, of Columbia, Missouri; two sons, Keith Shumate, and Leroy Shumate, both of Lebanon, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Cristal, Derek, Amanda, Staci, Lindsey, Tara and Scott; twelve great-grandchildren, Gabe, Mariah, Jared, Hope, John, Kaydee, Braxton, Mason, Kammi, Callie, Charli, and Carter; a brother, Carl Pendergrass, and his wife, Cindy, of Stoutland, Missouri; three sisters, Sharon Hafley, and her husband, Dan, of Lebanon, Missouri, Betty Hutchcraft, and her husband, Frank, of Sullivan, Missouri, and Judy Owens, of Licking, Missouri; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
She lived most of her life in the Lebanon, Missouri area, and she and John made their home near Lebanon after they were married. In addition to being a devoted homemaker to her husband and family, Norma worked as a seamstress for the H. D. Lee Company for over twenty years.
Norma was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Lebanon for many years, and later transferred her membership to the Phillipsburg Assembly of God Church. She played the guitar and sang, and loved gospel music. She had sung on the KLWT Radio Station and with the traveling Shumate Family Singers for over ten years. She was a devoted Bible reader and had read the entire Bible sixty times. She was a prayer warrior and prayed daily for each of her family members.
She enjoyed taking care of her home and loved having family dinners. She was a gifted seamstress and enjoyed sewing for her family and friends. She greatly enjoyed giving to her family. Her family was very dear to her and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Norma was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and know that her family and friends will cherish the wonderful memories she created for them during her eighty-nine years.
