Norma Thomason's Obituary
Norma Naomi Thomason 83, of Wichita, Kansas, died Tuesday September 9, 2008, in Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. Norma Roy was born October 30, 1924 in Mansfield, Missouri to Erna R. and Mamie Inman Roy. She grew up in Mansfield and graduated from Mansfield High School. She attended SMS College in Springfield and taught her first year of school at age 17. She taught at St. James School in Douglas County, Missouri, and rode her horse nine miles to school and back each day. She truly loved teaching even then. She moved to Wichita, Kansas in 1946. There she met Carl Thomason and they were married September 2, 1950. She taught at the Peterson One Room School, and was one of the last teachers to work there. She also taught at Peterson Elementary, Mary Benton Elementary, and finally Bryant Elementary. Norma went on to teach a total of 45 years of first grade without stopping, retiring in 1986. Norma had attended the West Link Christian Church in Wichita for many years until her health began to fail. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Carl on December 29, 1994; and a brother Eldon Roy. She is survived by a sister, Vern Chandler, of Hartville, several nieces and nephews, many students, and friends that loved her dearly. She touched the lives of so many. She was truly one of a kind, and will be greatly missed by all. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday September 12, 2008 in the Steele Memorial Cemetery.
