Oras Bowers' Obituary
Oras Edward Bowers, son of Henry E. and Myrtle (Mitchell) Bowers was born August 1, 1915 in the Dogwood Community of Douglas County, Missouri. He departed his life Friday, March 26, 2010 in Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri at the age of ninety-four years, seven months, and twenty-five days. On May 10, 1935 he was united in marriage to Ruby Loraine Philpott and to this union three children were born, and together they spent almost fifty-six years together before her passing on January 2, 1991.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mavis Chasteen; three sisters, Peggy, Fern, and Hazel; and four brothers, Everett, Oscar, Frank, and Austin.
Oras or “Si” as he was known by his family and friends is survived by a daughter, Beverly Roberts and her husband, James, and a son, Dennis Bowers and his wife, Janice, all of Fordland, Missouri; five grandchildren, Robin Ipock and her husband, Paul, Tammy Twitty and her husband, Larry, Amber Plemones and her husband, Gary, Melony Russell and her husband, Brian, and Penny Ivy and her husband, Gary; eight great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends. Si grew up in the Dogwood Community where he met and married Ruby. A few years after their marriage, they moved to Colorado where he worked as a gang extra for the railroad for a short time and then they worked on a dairy farm until 1951. They moved back to the Fordland, Missouri area in l952 and he worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Missouri Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1978. For the past two and half years he had lived in Century Pines Assisted Living in Ozark, Missouri.
He had accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fordland, Missouri. In his spare time he enjoyed riding horses and taking trail rides with his family. He also loved to fox hunt with all his friends.
Si was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and many accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories he created for his family and friends.
Graveside services are 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 30, 2010 in Fordland Cemetery, Fordland, Missouri under direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Seymour, Missouri. Visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m., Tuesday in the funeral home.
