Peter Prewitt (Bolivar)'s Obituary
Peter Gerald Prewitt entered this world on June 25, 1966, in Lincoln Park, Michigan. Peter is the firstborn son of Phyllis (Walicki) Prewitt and Fenton Prewitt. The family spent most of Peter's younger years in Albion, Michigan, where Peter's father worked at the fire department and his mother at the local school. As a young man, Peter developed a passion for fishing and often floated the river behind the family home, angling for the next bite.
In the 1980's, the family moved from Michigan to Missouri for Fenton's employment as fire chief at Neosho, MO. Peter and younger brother Greg stayed behind to finish their semesters at Michigan State University before joining their mom, dad, and youngest brother, Eric, in Neosho. While living in Neosho, Peter often watched the local Saturday night news, where he spotted the KOAM weekend anchor. Peter told his parents, "I'm going to marry that girl someday." And he did. Gayla (Clark) and Peter were married on July 18, 1987, in Joplin, MO. The couple's firstborn, Gracie, joined the family on their third anniversary.
After graduating in 1988 from Missouri Southern State University with a bachelor's degree, Peter fulfilled a lifelong dream and joined the Joplin, MO, Fire Department. A few years later, Peter gained employment with the Springfield, MO Fire Department, and the little family moved from Joplin to a small farm near Bolivar, MO, where Peter helped build the family home.
Later, the family welcomed three more children, sons Isaac, Isaiah, and Elijah. Through marriage, the family gained two additional children. Stephen Cotten married daughter Gracie, and Felicity (Harris) married son, Isaac. Peter's pride and joy are his children. He often told Gayla, "We are so blessed to have such great kids."
While living in Bolivar, Peter accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized with his oldest son, Isaac, in the Pomme De Terre Lake. Most recently, he attended the Heights Church in Bolivar, MO.
Peter loved helping people. You might say it was in his DNA. He thought of others, whether working as a first responder at the fire department, plowing a neighbor's driveway after snow, or just checking on a friend or family member. He was a hard worker and provided for his family, selflessly always putting them first. And he was the king of corny jokes. Co-workers at Midwest Rug looked forward to hearing his latest humorous oneliner, and he theirs.
We are heartbroken and miss him greatly, but we find comfort in knowing he is with our Savior in heaven. We love you, my Peter, Dad, Daddy, Pops, Papa Bear, son, brother, and friend!
