Preston Schmoutey (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Preston Schmoutey, son of Joseph and Mary Fair Schmoutey, was born July 26, 1916, in Bloodland, Missouri. He departed this life Tuesday, September 21, 2010, in his home, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety-four years, one month, and twenty-five days.
On November 1, 1946, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Hough, and to this union one daughter was born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; and two sisters.
Preston is survived by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Kathleen, of the home; a daughter, Kay Susan Henry, and her husband, Aubrey, of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; two granddaughters, Carla Hough, and Kathy Hammans, and her husband, Jeff, all of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Bailey, and Zachary Hammans; a sister, Anna Mooney, of Lebanon, Missouri; two nephews, Cecil Mooney, and his wife, Jeanette, of Springfield, Missouri, and Robert Schmoutey, and his wife, Beth, of Lebanon, Missouri; a niece, Carol (Schmoutey) Parrack, of Greenfield, Missouri; special family members, Melanie and Brittany Foltz, of Jenks, Oklahoma, and Michelle and Camden Downes, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; several great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.
He was born and raised in the Bloodland community, until the construction of Fort Leonard Wood took the town and the family homestead. The family then moved to the Stoutland, Missouri area, where Preston graduated as Valedictorian of his class at Stoutland High School. During his four years of high school, he was never tardy or absent, which set a school record at that time. He was also an excellent athlete and was very active in sports, especially basketball. Preston then served in the United States Army during World War II, and served thirty-four months overseas with the 62nd Armored Field Artillery. He was involved in the North African and Sicily Campaigns, and the Normandy invasion, and was awarded seven battle stars. After he and Kathleen were married, they made their home in the Lebanon area, and Preston worked as the manager of Sidney’s Drug Store and then Ketner’s Clothing Store. On June 10, 1953, he was appointed to the position of Laclede County Clerk by Governor Phil M. Donnelly. He was subsequently elected to four consecutive terms in that office. In September of 1971, he was appointed to Missouri License Fee Agent for Laclede County. In 1974, he became the terminal manager for Frisco Transportation Company, where he worked until retiring in 1982.
Preston made his profession of faith in Christ at an early age and became a member of Stoutland Baptist Church. After moving to Lebanon, he became an active member of First Baptist Church where he taught the 5th and 6th Grade Junior Boy’s Class for forty years.
