Robert Long's Obituary
Robert Charles Long, son of Alfred and Adelaide Harcourt Long, was born October 28, 1918, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He departed this life Friday, April 17,2009, in Christian Health Care South, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety years, five months, and nineteen days. On September 12, 1940, he was united in marriage to Sarah Charline Heard, and to this union two daughters and one son were born. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Charline, on February 21, 2007; five brothers, George, Fred, Dick, Eddie, and Bert; three sisters, Gladys, Florence, and Dorothy; and several half-brothers and half-sisters. Robert is survived by two daughters, Gloria C. Semsch, and her husband, Bobby, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Gwenda A. Parker, and her husband, Ronnie, of Grain Valley, Missouri; a son, Robert L. Long, of Lebanon, Missouri; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends. He was born and raised in Minnesota and then in Ashland, Wisconsin. He moved to Arizona where he worked for Fred Harvey’s Restaurant for a few years. During this time he met Charline somewhere around the Grand Canyon, and soon they were married. Robert served his country faithfully in the United States Navy during World War II, and after he was honorably discharged, the family moved to Lebanon, Missouri. He pursued a long and productive career with Laclede Electric Cooperative, retiring in 1983 as an area foreman. Robert had made his profession of faith in Christ and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Lebanon. He was an avid reader and especially enjoyed western and historical novels. He had an appreciation for nature and liked raising a garden each year. He possessed a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed laughing and joking. His family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Robert was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments, and will treasure the memories he made for his family and friends. Services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday April 20, 2009 at the Holman-Howe Funeral Home in Lebanon. Burial will be in the Hough Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call at their convenience to the funeral home under the direction of the Holman-Howe Funeral Home Lebanon, Missouri. A memorial has been established to the American Diabetes Association.
