Dear Lou and Family,
Dr. Kemp (he asked me to call him Ron, that I could never quite get the hang of that) was one of only a handful of the most influential and important people in my life. He was my professor, supervisor, confidant, mentor, and friend—in that order. In one of the most difficult times in my life, he would stay after we supervised students at the clinic and go to supper with me. Memories of his kindness and wisdom will go with me to my grave.
And while he served all of those roles for me and many others (as well as being the wise, compassionate, and gently challenging father) his deepest love was for you, and that was clear by the way he spoke of you...which he did frequently as time went on.
Lou Thelen, you boys and your wives, and all of you grandchildren...his love and respect for you and his joy and pride in you animated his being the Father of the Family Institute, the Father of Family systems professor and supervisor, and the insight and humanity behind Family Matters.
Each of you knows the twinkle in his eyes as he challenged you and the grin and laugh when you responded. He is in my therapy and in my heart every day, and you each will carry him with you for the rest of your lives.
Peace be with you now and forever,
Bill Spaine
