Roy Kathner's Obituary
Roy August Kathner, son of Immanuel Max and Inez Frood Allen Kathner, was born May 28, 1920, near Phillipsburg, Missouri. He departed this life Sunday, December 3, 2006, in Prairie Good Samaritan Nursing Home, in Miller, South Dakota, at the age of eighty-six years, six months, and five days. On October 5, 1943, he was united in marriage to Alma Audra Ware, and to this union three sons were born. Alma passed away on October 30, 1968. On July 10, 1970, he married Lena Burgher DeGeest, who preceded him in death on March 11, 1989. He was united in marriage to Alvina Hoffman Carroll on November 24, 1989, and she departed this life on March 24, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arlie Kathner, in World War II, and John Kathner; two sisters, an infant, Mary Hilda Kathner, and Sylva Henrietta Kathner King; and two stepsons, Steve and Wilbur DeGeest. Roy is survived by three sons, David Kathner, and his wife, Sheila, of Wilmar, Minnesota, Neil Kathner, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Alan Kathner, and his wife, Linda, of Faulkton, South Dakota; a grandson, Lincoln Kathner, and his fiancée, Quinn Swenson, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a granddaughter, Tricia Kathner Thompson, and her husband, Paul, of Chaska, Minnesota; a great-grandson, Vaughn Kathner; two stepdaughters, Carolyn DeGeest Hood, and her husband, Danny, of Moscow, Idaho, and Gladys Carroll Buechler, of Fairfax, Oklahoma; two stepsons, Tom Carroll, and his wife, Marlene, and Melvin Carroll, all of Harrold, South Dakota; a number of step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. He was born and raised near Phillipsburg, Missouri, and attended Lonesome Hill and Flag Pond Schools. He briefly made his home in Kansas City, Missouri, where he worked in the shipping department for Aircraft Accessories. He then moved north of Miller, South Dakota where he farmed from 1944 until 1958. He relocated to the Wolsey area in 1958, and farmed there until retiring and moving to Miller in 2003. Roy accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at the age of thirteen, and attended Sunday school and church at Flag Pond and Emmanuel Chapel Church, near Phillipsburg. While living in South Dakota, he attended Carlton Church and served as a Sunday school teacher. He also helped with relocating and rebuilding the church building. Later he attended the Presbyterian Church. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and always liked going camping with his family. He also enjoyed working in his garden. Roy was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and will treasure the memories he made for his family and friends. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 8, 2006, in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Lebanon. Burial will be in the Lonesome Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Services are under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Lebanon, Missouri. Memorials to the Lonesome Hill Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund may be made through the funeral home.
