Shirley Mayfield's Obituary
Shirley Elaine Mayfield, daughter of Oscar and Marie Cousineau Olsen, was born March 16, 1925, in Westmont, Illinois. She departed this life Friday, January 12, 2007, in Christian Healthcare South, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of eighty-one years, nine months, and twenty-six days. On May 7th, 1955, she was united in marriage to Laurence W. Mayfield, and to this union one daughter and one son were born. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Judge Laurence W. Mayfield, on August 5, 1969; a brother, Robert Olsen; and a sister, Dorothy Olsen. Shirley is survived by a daughter, Beth Anderson, and her husband, Kristopher, of St. Louis, Missouri; a son, Larry Mayfield, and his wife, Mary, of Ozark, Missouri; two grandchildren, Dane and Kelsey Anderson, of St. Louis, Missouri; a brother, Kenneth Olsen, and his wife, Elinore, a niece, Janet Olsen Ellis, and her husband, Mark, and great-nephew, Matt Ellis, of West Chicago, Illinois, a nephew, Bob Olsen, and his wife, Carol, of Madison, Wisconsin, a niece, Martha Mayfield Holland, and a nephew, John Mayfield; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends. She was born and raised in the Chicago, Illinois area and graduated from Wheaton High School. She attended Wittenburg College, where she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. She then began working in the Methodist ministry in Chicago with Bob Mayfield, where she met and soon married Bob’s brother, Laurence. After they were married, they moved to Lebanon, Missouri, where they made their home and lovingly raised their children. Laurence worked in the abstract portion of the Mayfield offices and Shirley helped him with that business. Following Laurence’s death in 1969, Shirley maintained Mayfield Abstract Company until 2004, and also retired that same year from the Hogan Title Company, where she provided consulting. Shirley was a longtime active member of First United Methodist Church in Lebanon. She also belonged to the Libra Club for many years. She had great appreciation for the arts, and especially enjoyed impressionistic art and classical music of all kinds. She was an avid reader, and greatly liked to travel. Some of her favorite travels were to France, Germany, Canada, New Orleans, the Grand Canyon, Washington, D.C., and the Colorado Mountains. Her family was very important to her and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren. Shirley was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories she created for her family and friends. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2007, in the First United Methodist Church, Lebanon. Burial will be in the Lebanon Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 7 - 8:30 p.m. under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Lebanon, Missouri. Memorials to Christian Healthcare South may be made through the funeral home.
