Thelma Morton (Bolivar)'s Obituary
Thelma S. Morton, 100, passed away Jan. 16, 2018 to go and be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thelma was born Jan. 3, 1918 in Atlanta, GA to Tilly Mae and Walter Thomas Sorrow. She had seven brothers and sisters who have preceded her in death along with her husband, Dr. William H. Morton and a son, Brec Morton.
Thelma grew up in Atlanta, graduated college, and married her college sweetheart, Dr. William H. Morton, a professor of Biblical Archeology and a Baptist minister. Together they had two sons, William Breckenridge Morton (deceased) and Frederick Marcus Morton.
Thelma went on to get her master’s degree from Harvard University in English and Reading and became and English and Reading Specialist for the Kansas City Missouri School District. She traveled extensively with her husband and family because of his archaeological work and research. Traveling all throughout the Mediterranean and Europe, living in Jerusalem for over 5 years and Oxford, England for 1 ½ years. Thelma was heavily involved with the faculty wives and services at Midwestern Baptist Seminary in Kansas City and taught Sunday school classes at Northgate Baptist Church for many many years.
She was an extremely loving mother, wife, and friend to all who knew her, and she would go out of her way for those in need. Thelma was also very well known for her excellent cooking talents and for a family from church or from the Midwestern Baptist Seminary to be invited to the Morton’s for dinner was like hitting the lottery.
Thelma is survived by her son, Marcus Morton and wife, April; granddaughter Sophie and husband, Collin Effler; great-grandchildren, Nolan, Brynn, Azalea, and one more due in June; and a sister, Grace Wheeler.
A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 23, 2018 at Mill Creek Baptist Church of St. Augustine, FL with Pastor David Beecher officiating. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Butler Funeral Home in Bolivar, MO. Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery.
