Thomas Schreier (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Thomas Frederick Schreier, son of John F. and Ellen “Nellie” Whalen Schreier, was born September 7, 1923, in Edwardsville, Illinois. He departed this life Monday, November 13, 2017, in Mercy Hospital, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety-four years, two months, and six days.
On May 8, 1948, he was united in marriage to Alice May Arnold, and to this union one daughter and three sons were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Mary, Margaret, and Marjorie.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife of sixty-nine years, Alice, of the home; a daughter, Cathy Newbrough, and her husband, Jim, of Lebanon, Missouri; three sons, Thomas Schreier, Jr., and his wife, Cathy, of Seattle, Washington, John Schreier, and his wife, Cecille, of Bismarck, North Dakota, and William Schreier, of Belton, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Andrew, Thomas III, Deborah, Chrissy, Mary Alice, Gabrielle, J. J., and Tommy; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
He was born and raised in Edwardsville, Illinois, and graduated from high school there. He then joined the United States Coast Guard and served in the invasion of Normandy during World War II. He was also stationed on the USS LST 176 ship during part of his time in the military. Soon after being honorably discharged from the Coast Guard, he married Alice and they made their home in St. Louis, Missouri, where they lived for four years and Thomas began working as an upholsterer. The family then moved to Sedalia, Missouri and later Mexico, Missouri, and Thomas continued to own and operate an upholstery business for over thirty years. In 1988, Thomas and Alice retired to Lebanon, Missouri, so Thomas could be close to Bennett Spring State Park.
Thomas was raised in the Catholic faith, and was an active member of St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Lebanon. He had been active in the Knight of Columbus for over fifty years and was a 3rd Degree member.
In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, doing word puzzles, and loved afternoon coffee breaks with his buddies. He liked watching game shows on television, and his favorite was “Wheel of Fortune”. He possessed a good sense of humor and was steadfast in his convictions. He was also proud of his military service and was extremely patriotic. His family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren.
Thomas was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and know that his family and friends will treasure the wonderful memories he made for them during his ninety-four years.
Memorial donations to Calvary (Catholic) Cemetery or St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church Building Fund may be made through the funeral home.
