Velma Ann Shumate (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Velma Ann Shumate, daughter of Clyde and Thelma B. Anderson Martin, was born May 31, 1943, in Salem, Missouri. She departed this life Saturday, December 10, 2011, in St. John’s Hospital, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of sixty-eight years, six months, and nine days.
On October 28, 1961, she was united in marriage to Howard Fred Shumate, and to this union two daughters and three sons were born.
Her parents preceded her in death.
Velma is survived by her husband, Howard, of the home; two daughters, Pat Herrman, and her husband, Donald, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Nancy Breedlove, and her husband, Brian, of Lynchburg, Missouri; three sons, David Shumate, and his wife, Miwako, Christopher Shumate, all of Lebanon, Missouri, and Michael Shumate, and his wife, Tina, of Springfield, Missouri; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Beth Fisher, of St. Louis, Missouri; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
She was born and raised in the Salem, Missouri community, and then moved with her mother to the Windyville area, where she graduated from high school. After she and Howard were married, they made their home in Lebanon and then Kansas City, and lovingly began raising their family. In 1980, the family moved back to Lebanon, Missouri. Throughout the years, Velma was a devoted homemaker to her husband and family.
In her spare time she enjoyed caring for her home, reading, and sewing. Her family was very important to her and she especially enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren.
Velma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and know that her family and friends will cherish the wonderful memories she created for them.
