Velma J. Cummins (Seymour)'s Obituary
Velma Cummins, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, departed this earthly life Monday, March 23, 2020, at her home in Seymour. She was seventy-eight years, six months and nineteen days of age. One of eight children, she was born Velma Jean White on September 4, 1941, in Hardenville, Missouri, to Francis and Ruby (Davis) White.
Velma was raised in Hardenville and attended Lily Ridge School in Gainesville, Missouri. As a child, her family moved to Wichita, Kansas. As a teen, she worked as a carhop where she met her future husband, Wesley Dean Cummins, who was working as the restaurant cook. They were married on February 9, 1960, and to this union three children were born. The Cummins’ moved to Seymour in 1962, to be closer to Wesley’s family. Velma was a dedicated wife, mother and working homemaker. She retired from Tyler Pipe in Marshfield, Missouri, after 35 years of faithful service.
Spending time with family – all the grandkids and great-grandkids – was most important; she loved them fiercely. Velma was a woman of faith and attended Seymour Nazarene Church. She was an avid reader and liked to work jigsaw puzzles. She was a bona fide member of the ‘Rusty Spur Coffee Club’ and met friends there daily. Velma knew just about everybody in town, and everyone liked her – she was a fun spirit with a beautiful smile. In addition to her parents, Velma was preceded in death by her husband of forty years, Wesley Cummins; son, Dale Cummins; two grandsons, Steven Cummins and Michael Cummins; four siblings, Betty and Willard Shafer, James ‘Sarge’ and Shirley White, Gene White, and infant sister, Wilma; and sister-in-law, Juanita White. Velma is survived by daughter, Janet Coonce and husband, Bill, and their three children, Jessica Matney and husband, Brian, and their seven children, Kaleb and his wife, Bailey, Kaylie and her son, Garyk, Katie, Ashlie, Audrie, Annie, and Kaiden; Tiffany Kirk and husband, Justin, and their two children, Waylon and Stella; and Jordan Cantrell and wife, Tiffany, and their four children, Taylor, Libbie, Brecken, Oaklynn, and Baby Cantrell due August 5; Velma’s daughter Sandy Bahnmiller and husband, Steve, have five children, Tonya Johnson and husband, Matt, and their four children, Keaton, Kenadie, Hailey, and Parker; Stephanie Hall and husband, Codi, Tyler Huff and wife, Nicole, Chelsea Huff and her son, Jeremy Oxenreider, Angela Eberle and husband, Jason, and their son, Bradley Huff; daughter-in-law, Cindy (Cummins) Dobson and husband, Mike, and their grandson, Dale Cummins; Velma’s sister, Bonnie White of Sevierville, Tennessee, and two brothers, Frank White of Springfield, Missouri, and Junior and Debbie White, of Republic, Missouri; many nieces, nephews, extended family; her best friend since 1969, Nina Peak; and countless other friends, neighbors and former co-workers. Due to restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, interment will be in the Seymour Masonic Cemetery, Seymour, Missouri, under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home and will be graveside and should be limited to family only. The funeral home will remain open for guests to sign her register book and walk-through viewing.
