Velma Curtis' Obituary
Velma Irene Curtis, daughter of Everett Dixon and Mary Ellen (Long) Gourley, was born January 16, 1909, near St. George, Missouri. She departed this life Wednesday, May 30, 2007, in Hartville Care Center, in Hartville, Missouri, at the age of ninety-eight years, four months, and fourteen days. On December 24, 1930 she was united in marriage to Jesse Otis Curtis who preceded her in death on February 10, 1984. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Cledith Kincheloe, Hazel Crisp, Mary Davis, and Frances Lawler; a brother, Marion Gourley; and an infant brother. Velma is survived by a cousin who was raised like a brother, Melvin Claxton, of Hartville, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Audrey Gourley, of Hartville, Missouri; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was born and raised in the Cold Water Community, near St. George, and attended the Cold Water School. After she and Jesse were married they bought the farm that they owned and operated throughout their lives. Then in May 1998 she made her home in the Hartville Care Center and accepted the staff and residents as her family. Velma had made her profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Cope Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a very prim and proper lady who took much pride in herself and presence. She loved working on the farm beside Jesse and enjoyed the solitude of being home. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing and working in her garden, growing many vegetables and beautiful flowers. Velma will be greatly missed and will live in our hearts forever. We celebrate her life and accomplishments and will treasure the wonderful memories she created for her family and friends. Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2007, in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Hartville. Burial will be in the Cope Cemetery, north of Hartville. Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience. Memorials to the Cope Cemetery and Hartville Care Center Residents Fund may be made through the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Hartville, Missouri.
