Interment will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kansas on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.
Virgil was born in Fort Scott, Kansas on August 16, 1932, the fifth child of Arthur G. Hare and Janet B. (Cameron) Hare. Later, the family moved to Merriam, Kansas where he attended the Merriam Grade School and Shawnee Mission Rural High School. He graduated with a BS degree from Rockhurst College (now University) in Kansas City, Missouri and received an MBA from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
Virgil served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955, spending most of that time stationed in England. Shortly after discharge, he was united in marriage with Gloria J. Picklar on October 30, 1955, at the Grandview Park Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, Kanas.
He served for years as an associate pastor and Sunday school teacher for the Presbyterian Church. Many Boy Scouts received good training under his troop leadership.
Virgil was employed by the Bendix Corporation, initially at the Kansas City division, and later in the corporate office in Detroit, Michigan. He later worked for the FMC Corporation in Chicago where he was responsible for worldwide human resource activities relating to compensation, benefits, executive pay, and other related administrative activities.
Upon retirement, Virgil and Gloria spent a year traipsing through many parts of the Asia Pacific region, visiting ten countries. Returning to the USA in 1996, they settled in Tucson, Arizona. While the desert Southwest has much to offer, they longed to return to the green grass and shade trees of the Midwest. They bought a farm near Buffalo, Missouri where they built a successful grass-fed beef business.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Janet Hare; siblings Arthur, George, Agnes, and Dorothy. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Gloria; children Bradley, Brent and wife Sandy; Julia and Jennifer; grandchildren, Jessica & husband Michael, and Dillon and great-grandchildren, Clare and Michael. Virgil leaves many relatives and close friends who will miss him dearly.
