Virgil Lewis Henderson, son of Vernon and Eva Howanietz Henderson, was born July 12, 1948, in Vinity Corner, Arkansas. He departed this life Saturday, March 29, 2014, in his home, near Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of sixty-five years, eight months, and seventeen days.
On April 13, 1986, he was united in marriage to Karen Sue Sanders, and they shared twenty-four years before Karen passed away on March 13, 2010.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Richard Henderson.
Virgil is survived by a daughter, Teresa Tiner, and her family, of Little Rock, Arkansas; three sons, Lonnie Henderson, and his family, Randy Snow, and his family, and Jim Snow, and his family, all of Lebanon, Missouri; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Jim Henderson, of the State of Arkansas; three sisters, Betty Henderson, Rita Hardin, and Vangelee Brown, all of the State of Arkansas; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.
He was born and raised in Arkansas, and then entered the military as a young man. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army, and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Upon being honorably discharged from the Army, he moved to Lebanon, Missouri, where he worked in building construction for many years. After he and Karen were married, they made their home, near Lebanon. Later, Virgil was forced to quit working because of a health disability.
In his spare time, he loved to go fishing, and was known to his friends, as “The Crappie King”. He also liked to play pool, barbeque, and go dancing. After his health began to fail and he had to use a walker to steady his steps, he called his walker his new dance partner and named her “Bertha”. He bore his illness with great dignity and courage and never complained. His family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed having time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Virgil was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and know that he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Memorial donations to the Curry Cancer Center may be made through the funeral home.
