Virgil W. Miller, son of John B. and Sylvia Jane McGuire Miller, was born February 9, 1927, near Decaturville, in Laclede County, Missouri. He departed this life Saturday, November 14, 2009, in St. John’s Hospital, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of eighty-two years, nine months, and five days. On September 16, 1945, he was united in marriage to Velda Imogene “Jean” Brown, and to this union two sons were born. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wilbert and Thomas Miller; and four sisters, Alma Jean Adams, Dora Mae Looney, Dorothy Webster, and Wilda Rogers. Virgil is survived by his loving wife of sixty-four years, Jean, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kerry and Deanna Miller, and Craig and Mitzi Miller, all of Lebanon, Missouri; five grandchildren, Danessa, Dinvir, Kacey, Bianca and Craightin; two step-grandchildren, Rich and Mani; four great-grandchildren, Dominik, Devyn, Katana, and Malachi; two brothers, Don Miller, and his wife, Shirley, of Springfield, Missouri, and Larry Miller, and his wife, Verna Rae, of Camdenton, Missouri; two sisters, Faye Dean Barnett, and her husband, Vernon, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Janie Kay West, and her husband, Larry, of Columbia, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Viola Miller, of Lebanon, Missouri; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends. He was born and raised in the Decaturville community and attended Lebanon High School. After he and Jean were married, they made their home in Lebanon and lovingly raised their sons. Virgil worked as a route salesman for Holsum Bakery in Lebanon for thirty-three years, and then was employed by Lebanon Ford Motor Company for a few years. He was the caretaker and groundskeeper of Mount Rose Memorial Park for over fifteen years and continued in that endeavor for as long as his health allowed. Virgil was saved at an early age at the Zion Baptist Church and was baptized in Bennett Spring. He and Jean were members of Second Baptist Church in Lebanon for several years before moving their membership to First Baptist Church. Virgil had been very active in his church and had been ordained a Deacon several years ago. Through the years, he had been involved in the choir, had taken part in several passion plays, attended Sunday school and worked in training union. In his spare time he enjoyed being outdoors where he particularly liked quail hunting and fishing. He maintained the acreage around their house and took great pride in caring for their yard, gardens, and pond. He possessed a delightful sense of humor and was a very friendly person who greatly enjoyed visiting with people. His family was very important to him and he especially loved spending time with his great-grandchildren. Virgil was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, and was a kind and caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and will remember him fondly as a devoted family man, a dedicated worker, and a true Christian gentleman. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday November 17, 2009 at the Holman-Howe Funeral Home Lebanon. Burial will be in Mt. Rose Memorial Park.
