Wayne Mayes (Bolivar)'s Obituary
Wayne Mayes, age 81 of Bolivar, MO went to his Heavenly Home Monday, May 21st, 2012 at 6:30 pm after suffering an apparent heart attack. During his time on this earth, he was full of life and energy and had a major impact on all who came in contact with him. The world will be forever changed by his presence.
He was born June, 18th, 1930 in Grundy County, TN the second son of Roy Clinton and Veola Patrick Mayes. He is survived by his sister Mary Ruth Rogers of Palmer, TN and his two brothers Byron D. Mayes and Glenn A Mayes of Tracy City, TN. He was preceded in death by his brothers Roy W. Mayes and Fritz L. Mayes.
Wayne enlisted in the United States Air Force on December 29th, 1950. While he was stationed in San Antonio, TX, he met and married the love of his life, Mabel Jean Mason on December 19th, 1952. They have five children, Wayne Mayes,Jr. and his wife Pennie of Tecumseh, MI, Jeannie Lynn Womack and her husband Lewis of Springfield, MO, Randall Ray Mayes and his wife Marcy of Springfield, MO, Douglas Roy Mayes and his wife Marlene of Strafford, MO, and David Jefferson Mayes and his wife Sheri of Springfield, MO.
In the mid 50’s Wayne and family left the beloved hills of Tennessee to find work in Cleveland, OH in the burgeoning auto industry. He worked for General Motors for 30 years eventually becoming the Supervisor of Material Control at the Tecumseh MI plant. His real passion however, was church planting. He was involved in starting nine churches In Ohio, Michigan, and Missouri. His last church plant was Heritage Baptist in Bolivar MO where he pastored for 1 year before retiring for health reasons. He also pastored multiple churches in four different states.
Whether it was one of his powerful “bear hugs,” a playful ribbing, or one of his inspirational words of encouragement, many of us were impacted by his life. His legacy lives on through his life’s work, his family, and friends. Along with the immediate family, he is survived by 11 grand children and eight great grand children. His life and spirit lives on in all of us who were impacted by his presence.
