Wilbert Amos (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Wilbert Warren Amos, son of Abram Hugh and Cora E. Lindsay Amos, was born January 10, 1923, near Orla, Missouri. He departed this life Saturday, January 27, 2018, in Lebanon South Nursing and Rehabilitation, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety-five years and seventeen days.
On April 13, 1946, he was united in marriage to Freida Pauline Hamilton, and to this union one daughter and one son were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pauline, on July 24, 2017; two grandsons, Jason and Matthew Amos; five brothers, Roy, Bill, Lee, Ralph and Joseph Amos; and a sister, Lorea Beard.
Wilbert is survived by a daughter, Glenda Stratton, and her husband, Steve, of Lebanon, Missouri; a son, Gary Amos, and his wife, Diana, of Lebanon, Missouri; three grandchildren, Jane Ann Massey, of Ozark, Missouri, Josh Amos, and his wife, Stephanie, of Lebanon, Missouri and Joseph Stratton, and his wife, Laura, of Lebanon, Missouri; seven great-grandchildren, Austin, Josie, Paula, Samuel, Isaac, Hannah and Emmylou; two sisters-in-law, Berniece Amos and Wanda Hamilton; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
He was born and raised at Orla, near Lebanon, Missouri. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a key player in capturing the Bridge of Remagan. This event opened the Rhine River for the Allies, and was pivotal in bringing down Hitler and the Third Reich. These men, including Wilbert, were the first to cross the bridge and were even kicking explosives, placed by the German forces, off the bridge as they crossed. After receiving his honorable discharge from the military, he began farming and then went back to school. He received his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from the University of Missouri at Columbia. He taught vocational agriculture and was an FFA Advisor at Wright City, Mountain Grove and Mansfield. Wilbert had been a loan officer for the Federal Housing Authority in Wright County, Missouri. He also taught science at the Lebanon Junior High School for several years.
Wilbert was ordained as a Deacon in the Mansfield Baptist Church. Later, he was an active member and a Deacon at Orla Baptist Church. He was also very active in the Lebanon Gideon Bible ministry for many years.
He was a hard worker and exceptionally motivated. His passion was farming, which he did throughout his life. He was a member of the Lebanon/Laclede County Retired School Personnel Association for many years. He loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Wilbert was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and know that his family will treasure the wonderful memories he made for them during his ninety-five years.
