I was fortunate when I was young to spend a week with my grandparents each year during the time they lived in St. Charles. We would go to the cardinals ball game. Grandma always brought hotdogs (they were the best). We would go "touring - visiting different sites like Bush Gardens and Grant's Farm. Those are fond memories of Grandpa behind the wheel. Just recently my Dad's Caretaker found a journal my mom kept in 1996. There were many entries of my parents and grandparents sharing visits and time together. All are gone now but my dear Dad. Many good memories.
My Grandpa was such a kind and loving man. One of my favorite memories of him is when I was a child. One Saturday morning he and I decided to paint all the flower boxes on the outside of the house and in the yard "red". Grandma and mom couldn't believe it when they came home - Grandpa and I had a good laugh and their reaction and off we went for ice cream! I often teased Grandpa calling him "the desert king of the ozarks". He loved his ice cream and sweets. Thank you, dear Grandpa, for the love and the wonderful examples you left. I love you.
Grandpa loved ice cream. Said that he would open his own ice cream store, except that he would eat all the profits. He also like swimming. When he was first taken to the hospital, he was very bright and alert. He wanted to know if there was a McDonald's around? Just in case he had to make a mad dash for a snack. Steve and I also, asked him many times over ..Do you know who I am? I told him, the day you don't know who I am, my heart will stop. When he was taken to the hospital, Steve was already there. When I walked in .. Grandpa looked at Steve and said .."Who is that?" Then he just grinned. Grandpa loved to watch sports .. Steve and Grandpa watched football games. He was a big Cardinals baseball fan. Grandpa and I took walks around Watkins Mill lake and to Lawson Lake.. We sat on the bench and enjoyed the views. He was with us at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. He loved sweet potatoes...He ate like he hadn't had a meal in 10 years. Which reminds me, he made a comment about his lunch at Lawson Manor..."He would rather swing a rattlesnake by the tail, than to eat this stuff". I call those 'Grandpa isms"
I took Grandpa to an auction in Liberty, last summer. I introduced him to the auctioneer & another friend. Grandpa was very cordial, as always, but then he said something to them about my driving....Steve Ritter's (the auctioneer) face turn red, then he commented. "Well she got you here didn't she?" I looked at him and said, were you looking at my speed-o-meter? He just grinned.
I also have fond memories of Uncle Billy, My Dad,s brother. When I was about 10 in 1958 I remember Uncle Billy stopped in for a visit. He showed me the proper way to kick a foot ball. I remember his soft voice and talked to me not at me.Peace be with your family in Lebanon

I have fond memories of Uncle Billy, my Dad's,( Joshua B. Mitchell) brother. I remember when he would visit with our family when he came home on leave. The best decision he made was when he married Aunt Doris. She was a jewel of lady and they just seemed to complement each other. My prayers are with all of you who accepted Uncle Billy as a part of your family. He was a kind-hearted man.
