My thoughts go out to the Peterson family. I only knew CPT Peterson for two weeks at the career course, but he was devoted, tireless, and kind. He consistently stayed late to assist us, mentoring and developing students. It was clear that he cared deeply about training future leaders. We are all better for having known such a caring and devoted man.

On behalf of the Soldiers and Leaders of the 554th Engineer Battalion, I would like to extend my sincerest and deepest sympathy to you and all the members of your family for the tragic loss of your husband and father, David. Words cannot describe to you how sorry I am about this tremendous loss with his recent death.
As you know, David was formerly a student (twice as a 2LT and CPT) in both Bravo Company for the Engineer Basic Officer Leader Course (EBOLC) and Charlie Company for the Engineer Captains' Career Course (ECCC), the Commander of Delta Company for young Engineer and Ordnance Soldiers during their Advanced Individual Training (AIT), and most recently a Small Group Leader (SGL) for the ECCC - Reserve Course (ECCC-RC) which trained students during their Professional Military Education (PME) here at Fort Leonard Wood.
He has made a lasting impact on this unit and so many others who he served with here and across the U.S. Army. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with you and your family during this time.

On behalf of the Compton family, let me pass our deepest condolences on the recent passing of CPT Peterson. To say David was a larger than life Leader would be an understatement. He will always be remembered as an outstanding Leader and Mentor – verified by his many accomplishments throughout his career. His can do attitude and love for his country were only surpassed by his incredible positive influence and zest for life in his every day actions.
