Harry Carnall’s father and my father were brothers. My father, Fred, left Mansfield to raise his family in California. Harry’s father Johnny stayed in Mansfield, raising my cousins and caring for our great grandmother, Alice Freeman, always known as Grammy. We visited Mansfield several times in my early years and we cousins were as close as long distance cousins could be. As the years past we lost touch. Harry remained in Mansfield carrying on the tradition of his father, raising his family and caring for his mother and father as they grew older. It was almost 25 years before I saw Harry again, and then only briefly. We reconnected by chance in our later years and I got to know him a little better. What struck me every time I saw Harry was that he was surrounded by family. Always a son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, never just Harry. It was obvious that his family was his entire life. Nothing else really mattered to him. His passing leaves an immense void there, but his memory will live long in the hearts of the family he loved, including mine.
