Mary Kotan-Brookstein
I lived in the area from 2005 until 2009. I shopped as often as possible at Countryside and all my eggs came from Rosemary, as did my grain (she taught me to grind my own grain and make my own flour) for my home baked bread. She also taught me the different grains so I could make things with other grains beside wheat.
I am making plans to return to the area this coming weekend and was going to stop to see her. I am so very sad to hear she passed but I know she lived a good and happy life, surrounded by those who loved her and those she loved. She talked often of the days with George and raising her own kids as well as all those she helped who were unwanted by others or those who were unable to care for special needs children. She was very protective of those she loved and I only met "her boys" after coming around for over a year. She was very careful not to allow contact by anyone who would bring harm to her or to those around her. She had a sharp wit, a sharper tongue and an insight into people which is not easily matched.
I will miss her. I have an apron she had for years which was in the store. When I asked to purchase it she laughed and said, "that old thing? Why, I have worn that for years and years. It has no monetary value." I told her it was just like one my mother wore when I was a kid and she said, "then your mother would want you to have it. Just remember me along with your mother when you wear it." I treasure that apron and think of both of them whenever I wear it.
Thanks to her family for sharing her with us. I know her daughter lived nearby and she talked of how proud she is of her family and the wonderful things they do for others.
