Shirley & Kenneth have been my close neighbors for at least 20 years.
We first met long before that in Leadmine on a trail ride with the Dallas County Saddle Club.
When they built their home on Wagon Wheel a few years later their energy, charm and compassion for their family, friends and neighbors brightened our secluded neck of the woods.
Potluck picnics and homemade ice cream gathered the family and community throughout the years.
You always looked forward to these occasions to spend time with their always entertaining circle of family and friends. Swapping recipes was a given because the best cooks brought a delicious smorgasbord to the outing everytime.
Shirley and I shared an affection for gardening, our farm critters and picking blackberries. When there was a juicy harvest of wild blackberries around you can bet we were out stomping through the bramble.
We swapped sweet potato slips and dug marigolds from her flower bed to transplant into mine.
Another joy was to have the awesome privilege to step-in as "mail man" from time to time on this side of town. It is a unique experience to day after day deliver mail and packages to your neighbors, family and yourself.
The heartbreak of Shirley's loss to all who knew and loved and stayed amazed at her spirit, tenacity and razor-sharp wit will never ease.
