Sylvester Burd (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Sylvester Clarence Burd, son of Clarence F. and Pearlie Mae Cossey Burd, was born January 24, 1919, near Phillipsburg, Missouri. He departed this life Tuesday, September 4, 2018, in his home, near Phillipsburg, Missouri, at the age of ninety-nine years, seven months, and ten days.
On December 12, 1946, he was united in marriage to Veta Juanita (Ree) Myers, and to this union one daughter was born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Juanita, on October 20, 2012; and a brother, Neil Burd.
Sylvester is survived by a daughter, Linda House, and her husband, Charles, of Phillipsburg, Missouri; two granddaughters, Cheryl Brown, and her husband, Todd, of Grovespring, Missouri, and Christen Wilson, and her husband, Christopher, of Marshfield, Missouri; a grandson, Brandon House, and his wife, Jessica, of Phillipsburg, Missouri; six great-grandchildren, Molly, Madeline, and Millie Brown, Mary Ree and Isaiah Wilson, and Jaci House; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
He lived his entire life in the Phillipsburg community, and graduated from Phillipsburg High School, where he played basketball. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army from July 1942 until November 1945, during World War II. He was stationed in France, Germany, Italy, and West Africa, and earned five bronze stars for each of the campaigns in which he served. He was also awarded a good conduct medal. After he was honorably discharged, he returned to Phillipsburg where he and Juanita were soon married. They made their home on their farm near Phillipsburg and lovingly raised their daughter. Sylvester owned and operated a cattle farm for many years, and was also a respected stockman.
Sylvester was a longtime active member of the Phillipsburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
He greatly enjoyed watching sports, particularly basketball and baseball, and was a St. Louis Cardinals fan. He also enjoyed fishing and sitting on his porch where he enjoyed visiting with his family and friends. He loved his family dearly and especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.
Sylvester was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and know that his family and friends will treasure the wonderful memories he made for them during his ninety-nine years.
Memorial donations to New Hope Cemetery or Regional Hospice, may be made through the funeral home.
