Virginia Thompson (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Virginia Thompson of Lebanon, Missouri left this world at the age of 99. She was the fourth child of George E. and Dorothea Moore. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Philip Thompson, siblings Louise Coleman of Lebanon, George Moore, Jr. of Rhode Island, Frederick Moore of Lebanon and Richard Moore of Denver. She is survived by her daughter, Penelope Trudeau and her husband, Dennis of Lebanon and her younger sister Lillian Umphres of Denver. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Virginia attended Bland School through eighth grade and Lebanon High School graduating in 1938. She then attended Chillicothe Business School for two years, later audited classes at San Francisco State University, and attended classes at Drury College.
She was well known as an employee of the U.S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood in the Civilian Personnel Office (1952-1986). She rose through the ranks there and in 1975 became the first female Civilian Personnel Officer at Ft. Wood and the first in an installation of the Fort’s size and complexity. She loved the work and the people she worked with. She felt it was an honor to work in support of the U.S. Army and the government of our country, and she did her best to assure the very best civilian support of our troops.
She was a Charter Member of Ft. Leonard Wood Credit Union (now known as Infuse) in 1954 and was re-elected to its Board of Directors every three years through 2009 when she retired.
She was also well known for her many volunteer activities after retirement. She was a charter member of Crosslines and a member of it’s Board beginning in 1981. She served as a volunteer worker there for over 20 years. She was the Treasurer of Lebanon Area Foundation for over 25 years. She also at various times served on the Board of Directors for COPE, Community Cares, operation Round-up, Lebanon Arts Council, Lebanon Arts Foundation, Lebanon Concert Association and Habitat for Humanity.
She was raised in the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ and upon returning to Lebanon in 1950, was an active and devoted member and served in many leadership positions.
